Engelmann Spruce, most well known for its excellent tone quality, is an amazingly strong, light and flexible wood and has exceptional stiffness-to-weight ratio. It also has beautiful uniform colour, usually a cream to almost white.

A grade tops might contain contrasting colours, light compression, or wider grain (8gpi). Defects can include faint colour, slight winter growth, light run out, localized deviation in grain, progression grain up to 10gpi at lower bout only (symmetrical), light knot shadow. Grain may be uneven and cross grain stiffness will be acceptable.

The pattern and amount and symmetry of bearclaw visible in the top varies. At least six inches of bearclaw can be found across the top. Photos show a range of patterns and are not an exact of what can be received.

Near perfect top. Even and straight grain. No runout. Generally white in colour. Tops by log number are available.
AAA Premium appearance
Knots and knot shadow are not allowed within the pattern area. Grain is straight and even or graduated. Minimal to no runout. Generally white in colour. Tops by log number are available.
AA Excellent working grade
Knots and knot shadow fall outside the pattern area. Grain may be uneven, wavy, or curved. Slight colour variation allowed. Slight runout allowed. Tops by log number are available.
A Value-focused instrument wood
Knots and knot shadow fall within the pattern area. Brown and orange colour allowed. Specific log numbers cannot be requested.
