Flamed & Spalted Bigleaf Maple | Violin | Back & Rib Set

$140.00
Only 1 available

A one-of-a-kind bookmatched violin back and rib set in spalted Bigleaf maple, sourced locally from Vancouver, British Columbia.

This piece combines natural spalting with underlying flame, creating a surface rich in contrast, movement, and depth—each half reflecting the organic patterns formed during the early stages of decay, now preserved in a stable form.

  • Bookmatched 2-piece back

  • Matching rib stock included

  • Spalting layered over natural flame

  • Locally sourced Bigleaf maple

The original block showed early checking and was stabilized with epoxy prior to processing, ensuring long-term usability. The instrument pattern area remains free of epoxy, allowing for traditional carving and finishing where it matters most.

This set offers an opportunity to build an instrument that stands apart—visually distinctive while still grounded in traditional materials and methods.

Understanding Our Grades

Some products are available in multiple grades, while others are offered as unique pieces without grading. Our grading system is based primarily on the appearance of the working surface. Grade reflects visual characteristics such as grain consistency, colour variation, figure, and defects. It does not necessarily indicate tonal quality.

Master Highest visual selection
Near perfect top. Even and straight grain. No runout. Generally white in colour. Tops by log number are available.
AAA Premium appearance
Knots and knot shadow are not allowed within the pattern area. Grain is straight and even or graduated. Minimal to no runout. Generally white in colour. Tops by log number are available.
AA Excellent working grade
Knots and knot shadow fall outside the pattern area. Grain may be uneven, wavy, or curved. Slight colour variation allowed. Slight runout allowed. Tops by log number are available.
A Value-focused instrument wood
Knots and knot shadow fall within the pattern area. Brown and orange colour allowed. Specific log numbers cannot be requested.
